Passenger killed, suspected drunk driver injured in crash in Monroe County

One person was pronounced dead and another injured after a suspected drunk driving crash on Route 209 in Chestnuthill Township.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred on the night of Saturday, November 9, and officers from the Fern Ridge Barracks were dispatched to the 1600 block of Route 209 at 10:46 p.m.

State police said the vehicle, a Kia Soul, was traveling north on Route 209 at a high rate of speed when it left the road and struck a large utility pole. The driver was transported to Lehigh Valley Pocono after suffering serious injuries. They are suspected of driving under the influence.

State police declined to name the driver Monday morning when requested by the Pocono Record.

The passenger, 47-year-old Rebecca Martin of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, suffered fatal injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt. According to the Monroe County Coroner’s Office, Martin was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m.

The West End Fire Department and Lehigh Valley Paramedics assisted at the scene.
