One person has died after an incident at a Canterbury ice rink on Friday.

St Johns attended the scene of a crash in Staveley at 4pm on Friday afternoon and airlifted one person to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.

Police have confirmed one person has died in Christchurch Hospital this morning.

Staveley Hall Society, which runs the Staveley ice rink, said the incident happened during a private curling session.

“In order to respect the family’s request for privacy, we will not be making any further comment at this time,” he said.

Police said the death would be referred to the coroner.

This is the second death from ice in Canterbury in just a few weeks.
