Bowness and Barrow streets are undergoing a gum clean

A province’s streets are having to undergo a ‘blitz’ cleanup to get rid of the discarded chewing gum.

Westmorland and Furness Council has secured a £27,500 grant from the Chewing Gum Task Force, which is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The first pavements to be tackled are The Glebe streets in Bowness and Dalkeith and Cavendish and Lesh Lane in Barrow.

The council said once the chewing gum is removed, it is up to people to keep the streets litter-free.

Cabinet member for climate, biodiversity and environmental services Giles Archibald said: “It is vital to remind the public that when it comes to litter there is only one place it should end up: in the bin.”
