Haiti’s transitional council fires interim Prime Minister Conille amid an internal power struggle

A transitional council created to restore democratic order in Haiti has signed a decree dismissing interim Prime Minister Garry Conille and replacing him with Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, a businessman who was previously considered for the job.

The decision of the nine-member council – published on Monday, November 11 – aims to replace Garry Conille with businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé after just five months in office.

The bulletin says the council voted by consensus on Nov. 8 to remove Conille former UN official and academic appointed in May to lead the country’s fight against rising gang violence and long-standing political instability.

Conille, 58, reportedly sent a letter to the transitional council requesting that the decision not be officially published.

Power struggle

The two sides are reportedly locked in one a power struggle for weekswhere the council wants to change the Ministers of Justice, Finance, Defense and Health against the wishes of the Prime Minister.

And Conille sent the council a letter this week asking for the resignation of three members accused of corruption.

It is not immediately clear whether the council – whose members represent different members political and social groups – even has the power to fire Conille.
