Sri Lankans are increasingly falling prey to cyber scam centers in Myanmar, Ministry of Defense warns – Breaking News


Colombo, November 12 (Daily Mirror) – Sri Lankans currently residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are being sent in groups to cyber scam centers in Myanmar and the National Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (NAHTTF) has received information through reliable sources According to the Ministry of Defense reports an increase in the number of newly recruited Sri Lankan citizens.

The NAHTTF has warned the public on several occasions about an increase in various forms of recruitment into cyber scam centers in Myanmar.

Recent investigations have shown that traffickers lure IT professionals with the promise of high-paying IT positions abroad. They attract workers with the promise of high-paying IT positions in other countries.

The investigation also reveals that these individuals are taken to places like Dubai under the guise of job interviews and then forced to work illegally in cyber scam centers in Myanmar. Research has further shown that in these scam centers they are subjected to mental and even brutal physical torture, such as electrocution.

“We strongly advise against using illegal migration routes as they are extremely dangerous and in violation of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Act. Job seekers should not travel to other countries on a visit visa,” NAHTTF warns.

The NAHTTF urges the public to:

• Pursue safe, legal migration options through authorized channels.

• Stay vigilant and report suspicious trading activity.

• Protect vulnerable individuals by informing relevant departments of Sri Lankan workers abroad who may be at risk, as well as their relatives and friends in Sri Lanka.
