Emily in Paris Season 4 Ending Decryption, Part 1

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Season 4 Part 1 of Emily in Paris.

For most of his previous seasons, Emily in Paris focuses on the messy love triangle between Emily (Lily Collins) and her friends, the impossibly cool French couple Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Camille (Camille Razat). Although Emily and Gabriel confessed their desire to be together in the cliffhanger Season 3 finale, the revelation that Camille was pregnant with Gabriel’s baby And the fact that she was secretly in love with artist Sofia (Melia Kreiling) seemed to put Gabriel and Emily’s feelings for each other on hold.

In Season 4, however, it seems like each of these friends is finally getting what their hearts desire, even if their situations are still intertwined. After a dramatic period of going off the grid to search for her soul, Camille decides to pursue a relationship with Sofia (who moved from Athens to Paris for her) while preparing to co-parent with Gabriel. Emily breaks up with her British boyfriend Alfie to finally pursue a romantic relationship with Gabriel after seasons of romantic tension and secret flirting.

The old adage that “true love never came easy,” however, seems to be a constant inconvenience for these friends and lovers. Sofia and Camille are staying at Gabriel’s while they look for an apartment, leaving Gabriel and Emily, whose best friend Mindy (Ashley Park) shares her small studio and bed, with no space to spend time together as a new couple. This unconventional living situation also highlights the long history and lack of boundaries between Camille and Gabriel, who declares that they will “always be a family,” especially with a baby on the way, much to Emily and Sofia’s chagrin.

When Sofia and Camille finally get their own apartment—coincidentally, in the same building where Emily and Gabriel live, it seems like the answer to the foursome’s anxieties—it actually reveals the group’s real problems. While shopping at the Puces for their new apartment, Sofia breaks up with Camille, telling her she never intended to move to Paris, but was caught up in her feelings for her—and is troubled by Camille’s reluctance to move away from the city and Gabriel. Sofia returns to Athens and extends an open invitation to Camille to join her and resume their relationship.

Camille’s post-breakup ennui, intensified by Emily and Gabriel’s budding romance, comes to a head when she goes to the gynecologist and discovers that her pregnancy test was a rare false positive and her period had not come due to stress—she had never been pregnant at all. Grieving both losses in the fourth season’s Part 1 finale, Camille chooses not to tell Gabriel that she is not pregnant, in an apparent attempt to avoid losing another person she cares about.

While Camille’s shocking revelation is hers to keep for now, it remains to be seen whether or not it will remain a secret, or rather, for how long. With the second half of Season 4 set to premiere on Netflix on September 12, time will tell how Camille’s big secret will affect her friendships with Emily and Gabriel and her relationship with Sofia.
