“Is it common for SG boss to insult and fire staff without notice?” – woman asks after friend is “depressed” over unfair dismissal

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean employee was subjected to severe verbal abuse by her boss, who also forced her to leave the company without notice. Her friend later took to social media to question whether such practices were common in Singapore.

“My friend and I worked in the same company but in different positions. I had left the company for a few months but after that I realized that my friend was forced to leave the company without any notice and without any mistake,” she wrote on r/askSingapore.

“By asking her to leave, the boss chose the most mean way to ask her to leave, by insulting her, using f-words, saying she is a slut. He forced her to write a declaration letter and did not pay her one month’s notice salary.

“Is this common when you work here and she just has to accept it?” she asked.

She added that the whole ordeal had left her friend “totally panicked and depressed”, highlighting the emotional toll the situation had taken on her.

“Current or not, this is definitely false.”

In the thread, netizens expressed deep sympathy for the employee, saying that no one should have to endure verbal abuse at work.

They also stressed that in Singapore, employees are generally entitled to adequate notice before being dismissed and must be treated with respect throughout the process.

Several people urged the affected employee to seek legal advice and report the abusive behaviour to relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) or the Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment (TAFEP), to rectify the situation.

One netizen said: “Whether this is common or not, it is definitely a mistake. Report it to MOM and hope your friend feels better now, no employee deserves to be treated this way.”

Another commented: “File a harassment complaint with the police and file a complaint with TAFEP.”

Some netizens also speculated that the employee may have worked in a small or medium-sized business (SMB), where toxic behavior and problematic bosses can be more common.

One netizen said: “This is not normal, but it is very common in SMEs. The problem is that the employee usually has no other choice because he is working and needs money, while the employer has plenty of money to compensate for any loss of income in the event of job loss.”

Another said: “This can happen in SMEs. You can’t fire someone on the spot in a multinational, unless it’s a serious matter like theft, assault, indecent exposure, giving the finger to your boss, etc.”

“If you have poor performance at work, you will have to go through PIP first. If you have enough evidence of unfair dismissal, you can go to MOM.”
