Gov. Tim Walz Goes Viral After Posting Family Recipe for ‘Turkey Tater-Tot Hotdish’

Kamala Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, is going viral after sharing a popular Midwestern recipe, and social media users appear to be trying it out.

The Democratic vice presidential nominee from Minnesota, who is set to speak at the 2024 DNC on Wednesday in Chicago, recently took to X to share his family’s recipe for a turkey hot pot.

“Minnesota is the number one turkey producing state in the country. Fun fact. And you can eat it year round. Here’s one of my family’s recipes,” Walz captioned the post.

The recipe has been viewed 1.5 million times since Walz posted it on August 9.

This hot dish is very popular throughout Minnesota and the Upper Midwest.

“Hotdish is a uniquely upper-Midwestern dish, but it is particularly popular in Minnesota and North Dakota,” Eater.com reported.

“A creamy sauce binds together three essential elements of a hot dish: starch, protein, and vegetables. And while the rest of the country might call it a casserole, be warned: While all hot dishes are casseroles, the reverse is not true,” the outlet continues.

Walz’s hot potato dish combines ground turkey, green beans, bacon, mushrooms, shredded cheese, spices and herbs in a baking dish — and Walz seems to create different versions of the Midwestern meal.

“America has a new Midwestern dad who loves hot food and who better to teach you about hot food in Minnesota than this Midwestern mom,” she said in the video.

She seemed to enjoy the recipe and gave tips at the end for others who wanted to try this dish.

“Next time just use taco seasoning, it’s so much easier…and use twice as much,” she said.

“Remember, friends, the hot pot recipes are just suggestions, so make them the way you like. There is no wrong way.”

The social media user ended up approving the taste after recreating Walz’s hot dish recipe.

“Governor Tim Walz thinks he’s a VP, huh? And he thinks he’s a good cook? Well, after tasting this hot dish, I have to say something I almost NEVER say on here… let him cook,” he captioned the video.
