Kolkata rape and murder case: Scuffle breaks out between police and BJP protesters | Watch

A scuffle broke out between Kolkata police and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers protesting the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday.

West Bengal Opposition Leader P. Suvendu Adhikari said the Bengal BJP is protesting to demand justice for the victim and resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee. “The BJP is fighting, justice must be done and the CM must resign immediately,” Adhikari said.

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said Bengal and the entire country were on the defensive over the incident. “The country is ashamed of the way the chief minister is trying to shield the accused,” Ghosh said.

Stating that the Supreme Court judge had said he had never seen such a thing in his 30-year career, Ghosh added: “The entire administration needs to be cleaned up and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee must also be replaced… The accused must be punished and those protecting them must be removed from power.”

BJP leader Roopa Ganguly, who participated in the protest, said people in West Bengal had little hope. “Although the evidence has been destroyed, we are hopeful that the culprit will be arrested,” he said.

BJP leader CR Kesavan had earlier claimed that Mamata Banerjee had lost the trust of the people of West Bengal and called for her resignation. BJP leader and national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla had also accused TMC of trying to save the accused in the case.

The rape and murder of the trainee doctor on August 9 sparked protests across the country.

The Supreme Court, which took cognisance of the matter, on Wednesday asked who was in touch with the principal of RG Kar Medical College and why he delayed the FIR.

Stating that justice and medicine cannot be stopped, the court directed the Centre and states to take urgent steps to institutionalise security of doctors across the country.
