Teen killed in Alabama homecoming shooting died saving girl’s life, family says

The parents of a teenager who was murdered last weekend mass shooting at Tuskegee University said their son died a hero.

La’Tavion Johnson, 18, died early Sunday in a hail of gunfire which also injured 16 others.

On one of the videosOne girl said he pushed her out of the way, and then he got shot,” said the victim’s father, Larry Johnson. “She posted that someone saved her life, and he lost his life.”

“He’s a hero in his own way,” Larry Johnson said.

The gunfire broke out just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday in apartments on the West Commons campus.

The shooting occurred as Tuskegee’s 100th Homecoming Week was coming to an end. The football team had played Fairfield-based HBCU Miles College on Saturday.

Lt. Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said that of the 16 injured, 12 had been shot. They were taken to hospitals in Montgomery and Lee County.

According to Burkett, four others suffered injuries during the ensuing chaos.
