SINGAPORE: Another incident related to rising food prices has recently attracted unfavourable attention from netizens, with Reddit users calling the S$7.40 price tag for a kaya toast “ridiculous”.

On Thursday (August 22), u/Alex10019 posted a photo of a menu supposedly from Toast Box on r/Singapore. He captioned it: “Toast Box is now $7.40. This is ridiculous.”

The article attracted a lot of attention from commenters, many of whom agreed that the price listed for a traditional kaya toast set seems unreasonably high.

“$7.40 for a roll, eggs and a coffee/tea “This is crazy,” one wrote, while another pointed out that the prices on the menu are more expensive than McDonald’s.

“All these toast shops only have the cheapest, cheapest dishes and they want to charge $7 for them?” wrote another, adding that people would be better off buying kaya toast at Koufu or Kopitiam, where they cost “$3, $4 or $5 at the most.”

“Siao lah, this is getting out of hand. For this price, I can buy a small loaf of bread, a bottle of cheap peanut butter/kaya and a small tray of eggs. I make my own food at home and eat more in quantity,” another commented.

Others wondered whether the displayed menu was from Marina Bay Sands or an equally expensive restaurant, with one saying that when they recently ate at Toast Box in Woodlands, the kaya toast set did not cost S$7.40.

The Independent Singapore contacted Toast Box for further comment or clarification.

In January, an 8days article quoted a Toast Box employee as saying that the Kaya Traditional Toast Set had increased from $6 to $6.20, although for Kaya toast, that price was already considered high. That same month, a Reddit user posted a photo of the new prices at Toast Box, also showing this.

In December 2023, a shocked Reddit user showed how the prices of Ya Kun Kaya toast had increased by 31% compared to January 2021.

At that time, the Ya Kun Kaya Toast Set A, the chain’s simplest menu, consisted of two slices of Kaya Toast with butter, two boiled eggs and a choice of a regular hot beverage, or a coffee Or THE, cost S$4.80. By April 2022, the price of Set A had increased to S$5.60, and by December 2023, to S$6.30.

8days pointed out in an article comparing kaya butter toast at five cafes in Jurong in January this year that Toast Box and Ya Kun Kaya Toast were the only restaurants offering kaya butter toast at a price above S$6. /TISG
