Before I jump into your bi-weekly mystery series (new releases, vigilante roster, and news), I have an A24 movie to recommend in theaters if you’re looking for a popcorn-filled break. Sing sing The film stars Colman Domingo and former inmates who participated in the program called Rehabilitation Through the Arts, which the film is based on. You can watch the trailer here and here’s their review.

A Deadly Woman (Harlem Renaissance Mystery #3) by Nekesa Afia

For fans of armchair travel and historical mysteries (this one is set in the 1920s).

Louise Lloyd has moved to Paris from Harlem and is loving her new, quiet life, working in a perfume shop and enjoying the nightlife with her friends. Until a woman searching for her missing daughter needs Lloyd’s help. Now Lloyd has infiltrated a group of elite young artists and wonders if one of them would hurt one of their own?

If you want to read the series from the beginning, choose Dead Dead Girls, which begins during the Harlem Renaissance.

To the End (Detective Annalisa Vega #4) by Joanna Schaffhausen

For fans of ex-cops turned private investigators, multiple suspects and thrillers!

Annalisa Vega has left the Chicago Police Department and is now a private investigator with a big case: Mara Delaney has written a book, soon to be released, arguing that there are good sociopaths and that neurosurgeon Craig Canning is proof. Until a woman in Canning’s apartment building falls to her death and Delaney begins to question her own beliefs. Now she has to find out if Canning is a murderer before the book’s publication date. Vega takes it on, except she discovers that even though the cops have ruled it an accident, she suddenly finds herself in a cat-and-mouse game for answers.

If you want to start at the beginning of this series, pick up Gone for Good — Schaffhausen is one of the authors I turn to every time I want to dive into a solid mystery. She’s very good at character and pacing.

Anti-riot recommendations

All of the audiobooks I’m holding off on from my library arrived at once, so I’m playing a game of how many books I can read before the library’s deadline! The first book I started was The Bang-Bang Sisters by Rio Youers, which starts with a rock band that’s actually a cover for a group of vigilante “sisters.” This led me to dive into the vigilante theme for a few background book selections.

Winter Accounts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden

Virgil Wounded Horse lives in South Dakota on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. He’s become a vigilante for hire since the local police have to refer cases to the FBI and the FBI doesn’t take every case they get. That means many criminals, from predators to thieves, go unpunished. Virgil is willing to beat up anyone who slips through the cracks, so you’d think he’d jump at the chance to get paid big bucks for an investigation. He’s hesitant because he’s hired by his ex-girlfriend’s father. But the case hits close to home and he’s soon working with the FBI and his ex to solve the case.

(Trigger warnings for addiction; mentions of suicides, one with details; past rapes including children mentioned, but not graphic; child deaths; off-page child sex crimes; fat shaming)

They never learn from Layne Fargo

In this thriller, two stories take place at Gorman University. Scarlett Clark is an English professor who chooses the worst man on campus every year and kills him. Carly Schiller is a freshman, finally away from her oppressive father. She must contend with a popular roommate as she tries to find her own way. Scarlett tries to avoid getting caught and Carly tries to protect her roommate after an assault.

(Trigger warnings for rape; mentions of past parental abuse; discussions of murders covered up to look like suicides)
