Guillermo del Toro faces ‘angry, territorial’ spirit in haunted hotel room while filming ‘Frankenstein’

It all started innocently enough. While wrapping filming on his adaptation of “Frankenstein” in Aderdeen, Scotland, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro was alerted to a haunted room in the hotel where the crew was staying. Rather than being put off, the monster enthusiast was intrigued. On X, formerly known as Twitter, del Toro documented his ghostly adventures as if he were on a mission.

“While in Aberdeen I am staying in an old 19th century hotel,” he wrote in a post last week. “I am in the most haunted room in this hotel, which was vacated this morning by one of our producers. Strange electrical and physical events have spooked her and caused her to leave as soon as possible. Stay tuned, if anything happens I will let you know.”

This isn’t the first time Del Toro has faced ghosts and ghouls. He continues his message by saying: “I always stay in the ‘most haunted rooms’, but only once did I experience something supernatural – the rest of the time: nothing. I have high hopes.”

In an update the following day, del Toro explained that while nothing alarming had physically happened, he found the atmosphere in the room “oppressive” and decided not to spend “much more time” there. He was careful to point out that while he was investigating the space, he was “sleeping in another room,” explaining that he needed “6 hours of sleep to get through a good day of filming.”

“I stop here early and late in the day, but there’s something in this room with me…” del Toro wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Between the end of his shooting day on Thursday and dinner, del Toro decided to make another stop at the room, and he wrote at the time: “The room gives off more than just vibes. There’s something angry and territorial about it. A hint of rage.”

To document his experience, he took the photo below.

Continuing his investigation, del Toro even tried to do electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) via an app on his phone.

The “Crimson Peak” director then wrote a message seemingly confirming his belief in an afterlife. He said: “No sounds or images occurred – just an oppressive atmosphere – I will return to room #4… Life is unstructured – no grand finale.”

Wrapping up his adventure Friday after his day of filming, del Toro wrote an epilogue to his experience where he shared that while he didn’t see any concrete evidence of a ghost in Room 4, a crew member did.

“One of our actors felt a similar sensation in the room and one of our crew members saw someone outside the window… on the second floor,” del Toro wrote.

Del Toro is currently wrapping filming on his Netflix adaptation of “Frankenstein,” which was shot in Toronto and Scotland and stars Jacob Elordi as the Monster and Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, along with Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance, and more.
