MGK — formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly — opens up about his recovery. In an interview on Bunnie XO mute blonde In a podcast, the rapper-turned-rock star shared a story about his father, who stood by his mother after his father died when he was just 9 years old.

MGK, 34, shared that his father and grandmother are on trial for murder.

“The story I was always told was that their father dropped the gun and his head exploded,” MGK said. “This all happened in the same room as my father when he was 9 years old. He and my grandmother were tried for the murder. They were both acquitted.”

The trial had an impact on MGK’s father years after the fact, and MGK recalls how certain noises and sounds could trigger tensions in his father. MGK noted that these triggers often caused tension between the two of them.

“I remember being mad at him all the time as a kid, because if I scared him or he heard a big bang or a loud noise, he would freak out, like crazy,” MGK said. “And I would be like, ‘You’re supposed to be a man, man, why are you acting like that?’ And it made me hate him. But then you sit there and think about a kid who was tried at nine years old for murdering his father.”

Although he eventually came to understand his father, MGK said he believes he inherited some of his father’s trauma. This then pushed him to adopt a tougher personality. But for now, he said he is unlearning the projected behaviors and mindsets and embracing his sensitivity.

“I think I projected myself as someone who had the stamina to endure all of these things that come with fame and criticism and hate. Because I fought through all of that trauma by becoming what I always wanted my father to be, which was tough, and you get it all out and fight back against anyone who picks on you,” he said. “I’m in the process of repairing myself and I don’t have the energy to be the image that I was.”
