John Mulaney talks about his journey to recovery from addiction – and the support he receives along the way.

The Saturday evening live alum, 42, who was revealed as GQ‘s 2024 Man of the Year on Tuesday, November 12, spoke candidly with the publication about his whirlwind year as a new father of two, as well as his ongoing recovery from addiction.

“There was a time when I would have told you I couldn’t fly, sleep or perform unless I had a Klonopin,” Mulaney told the outlet. “I would have said, ‘It sucks because I don’t want to take Klonopin and Xanax all the time, but I have to.’ ”

The comedian, who checked himself into a rehab clinic for cocaine and alcohol addiction in December 2020, recalls a “crazy” night at the height of his addiction, when he had taken so many drugs he thought he was going to die.

“I thought, ‘Okay… I’m going to take it all the way back. That seemed like a Tuesday. And on Thursday night I did it again,” he said.

Mulaney shared that with his wife Olivia Munn chose to organize a mini-intervention himself to involve himself more in his recovery process. When she was six months pregnant, Mulaney said she also decided she would administer random drug tests to ensure he stayed on the path to a successful recovery.

“It’s like a relief… I like that that question isn’t even on her mind or on anyone else’s mind,” Mulaney said. “Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”

PEOPLE registered for the first time Mulaney and Munn’s romance in May 2021. The couple tied the knot in July and share two children, a son Malcolm Hiệpwho turns 3 on November 24, and a 2-month-old daughter May Junewelcomed through a surrogate.

“(She) got to date me outside of recovery, which they call a reverse catch,” he joked, adding, “It’s a very, very fortunate thing to have met this woman.”

Munn, who revealed her bilateral breast cancer diagnosis told in March GQ about meeting Mulaney at that time in his life: “I was looking at someone who was just sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.”
