Everett family mourns as police search for clues in fatal early morning collision

Everett police continue to investigate a fatal crash Saturday morning three people were killed and two women were seriously injured after a driver jumped the curb, drove down the sidewalk and crashed into a nearby fence.

Police said several people ran from the car and arrested three boys, who were later released to their families.

Police said a total of five people were affected, but two women who survived were taken to hospital in critical condition. While one woman had injuries to her back and legs, the other had multiple traumatic injuries.

The crash happened around 12:45 a.m. Saturday near the corner of Airport and Center Roads in Everett.

Police say they still don’t know who was driving the car when this happened. Investigators were back in the area Monday, checking nearby businesses for surveillance footage and any possible witnesses. Still, state laws limit their ability to interview incarcerated youth.

Keiffer Meyers said his older brother, 39-year-old Jonathan Anderson, was in this area when a car jumped the curb, crashed into a nearby fence and killed five people. According to family members, Anderson and his girlfriend were among the three dead.

“They took a real angel out of our family, so it’s just hard,” Meyers said. “Just a really good person and he was just full of love and also a very strong person.”

Everett police said the area has a transient population density and that the victims were sleeping on the grass near the sidewalk when they were hit. Meyers said his family only learned his brother was living on the streets.

“He was very good at hiding it and very good at trying not to worry anyone,” Meyers said. “We kind of knew something was going on, and we didn’t know what it was, but we had no idea it was to this extent.”

“That’s the annoying thing about this. He supported me so much, I wish I could have supported him,” Meyers added. Everett police said the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Department attempted to pull over the suspect car for a traffic stop before the crash, but the driver fled and was not pursued.

They believe there were three to four people in the car at the time of the crash, who got out and ran. Three young boys were arrested, but police said state laws requiring youths to have access to an attorney before being questioned limited investigators’ ability to talk to the boys, and they were later released to their families.

Meyers said at this point he just wants the parents of the boys believed to be involved to pay for the costs of his brother’s funeral.

“Your kids took my big brother, and you have to pay for their mistakes,” he said. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s office has not yet released the names of the others killed in this incident.
