Meet the horses using their story to make a difference in children’s lives

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WTVF) — We’ve all overcome challenges in life.

It can be hard to do, but knowing someone who understands what we’ve been through can make it a little easier.

Maybe we can’t always find this in people, but it’s even more true in animals.

We’ve previously brought you stories from Saddle Up in Franklin. The organization provides equine therapy and other opportunities to children and young adults with disabilities.

With dozens of horses on the property, they come from different backgrounds.

“So Bishop is blind in one eye,” said Lindsey Wood, who runs classes at Saddle Up. “Pip was rescued. We think he did some kind of work where he was pulling a cart or a buggy, just based on some of the scars on his face.”

But what is visible on the outside does not reflect the inner motivation and determination.

“With these horses in particular, I think it’s because they know they’re coming from a difficult situation that they’re willing to help others,” Wood said. “Especially when they’re getting the care and love and attention that they may not have gotten in their first life or their first career.”

These horses undergo rigorous training from the moment they arrive at Saddle Up. Wood summed up the behavior of these horses perfectly.

“He’s a huge size,” Wood said of Bishop. “He’s our biggest horse on the property. So, in addition to the trust they have on his back, I think they gain a lot of trust working with him and gaining his trust because he’s blind on the right side.”

Every day is a new opportunity to put one foot, or one hoof, in front of the other. It is an opportunity not to dwell on the hand that is given to us, but to lend it to a friend.

“Given that he has limitations, it’s nice to be able to talk to our kids about it because we can show them that just because you have difficulties doesn’t mean you can’t do it.”

“Diapers for Degrees” Program Expands to MTSU

It’s been a while since I’ve had to buy diapers (thank goodness!) for my boys. But when I recently bought a pack for a baby shower, I was SHOCKED at the price. That’s exactly why I hope anyone who needs help sees Jason’s story about the expansion of the Diapers for Diplomas program. Hats off to everyone who is pursuing a college degree and raising babies. Two tough jobs! Help us spread the word – it could make all the difference.
