A suspect has been charged in connection with the Birmingham shooting that left one man dead and another injured.

Andrew Blake Carter, 37, is charged with murder in the Oct. 30 slaying of 38-year-old Melvin Anthony Burkes, according to court documents made public Tuesday.

He is also charged with attempted murder for the surviving victim’s injury.

The shooting happened just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue SW

Police received a report that a person had been shot and arrived on the scene to find a man who had suffered a non-life-threatening wound. Officers then found Burkes lying on the sidewalk with serious gunshot wounds.

Bystanders offered aid to Burkes until officers took over life-saving measures.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue took both victims to UAB Hospital, where Burkes was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m.

A motive has not been disclosed.

Carter was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Friday and remains held without bond.
