Macomb County Declines Prosecution in Alleged Double Voting Incident

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido announced today that his office will not authorize charges in connection with an alleged double-voting incident during the August primary election.

After a thorough review of the evidence, the prosecution concluded that there was no probable cause to believe that a crime had been committed.

“We evaluate cases based on their facts. St. Clair Shores election officials quickly identified the issue, preserved the records for review, and promptly reported it. This demonstrates that election protections are effective and preserve overall integrity,” said Attorney Lucido. “Voters, election officials, and law enforcement come from different backgrounds and fields, but we all share the same goal: to protect our most sacred duty as Americans: E pluribus unum.”

The incident involved four voters who were flagged for casting two ballots in the Aug. 6 primary election in St. Clair Shores: one absentee ballot and one in-person ballot.

Although voting twice is a crime in Michigan, documented cases of double voting are extremely rare due to the safeguards in place. The investigation confirmed that the safeguards worked as intended to detect the problem.

“This situation highlights the opportunity for law enforcement and election officials to look at this and other issues and educate themselves on this,” said District Attorney Lucido. “Macomb County clerks know the rules and follow them, and they work to protect our elections and ensure the rigor of the process.”
