Taste testers baffled by ‘better’ version of Jaffa Cakes, half as expensive as original

Three taste testers compared, as part of Channel 5’s Aldi Vs Lidl: Which Tastes Better?, McVitie’s original Jaffa Cakes with three supermarket versions, and the results were surprising

Three taste testers were shocked to hear that a supermarket’s own brand Jaffa Cakes were “better” than the iconic McVitie’s version. In a blind taste test of the original and three more different versions of the classic treat, chef and journalist Jonathan Phang, food writer Alexandra Dudley and comedian Tom Reid Wilson shared their candid opinions on each sample.

Starting with record A, Tom said, “I don’t think this is the original, but I think it’s better than the original.”

The trio were then impressed with plate B, with Jonathan particularly noticing the lack of flavour. Plate C sparked some discussion with Alexandra suspecting it was the original, while Jonathan commented: “It was a long time ago but I don’t remember it being like that, you can barely taste the orange.”

All three unanimously ranked record D as the worst, criticizing it as “old” and “tough”, while Tom hoped it was not McVitie’s version.

After sampling all the options, they concluded that plate A was the best choice, followed by plate C, B and then D. The big reveal revealed that their favorite was actually Lidl’s own brand, priced at £1 £19 for 24 cakes, while the second… up was Aldi’s version, which cost £1.35 for the same quantity.

“This is a real bargain,” Tom said of the result, before revealing that “the most expensive by a significant margin” was the McVitie original, priced at £2.30 for a box of 20.

Finally, D was unveiled as Tesco’s version, which the store describes as “spongy and fruity”, retailing at £1.35 for 24.
