Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A 17-year-old Dalit boy was humiliated and forced to become ‘Murga’ and make the sound of a rooster, Shahdol police said on Saturday. The police have registered cases against five accused in the case.

The attackers had also filmed the incident and uploaded it on social media, which went viral. After the video reached the police, a team investigated the case and took action against the accused.

The victim was forced to squat and hold her earlobes in a manner called ‘murga banana’ in local parlance and which is inflicted as punishment, police said.

Accused charged under SC/ST Act

Raghavendra Tiwari, inspector of Kotwali police station, said, “The accused filmed the victim’s ordeal and posted the clips on social media. After seeing the clips, we identified the victim, who is a Dalit. He told us that the accused, known to him, took him to a desolate place and subjected him to this ordeal on August 25 due to an old dispute.”

The accused have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and efforts are on to nab them, the official added.
