A similar piece of metal smashes through the windshield of another car on I-15 two months later

A couple said a metal rod smashed through the windshield of their car while driving on I-15 through Midvale Saturday.

That is the second time and such an incident has occurred in two months.

In September, KUTV reported on a similar piece of metal being kicked to the ground on the highway and crashing through another couple’s window. It turns out that the two incidents are very similar.

PREVIOUS REPORTING:

Both times involved a couple traveling in a car together, with the boyfriend driving his girlfriend’s car. It happened in the same area on I-15 – not far from 7100 South in Midvale – they were traveling at the same speed, and it was even the same type of metal piece – and it was KUTV’s first story that led to the latest victims reaching out.

“That was almost the end of my life,” Shane Scheller said as he held the piece of metal that nearly killed him. “The piece of metal flew through my windshield and flew through the gap between the headrest and the door, landing in my back seat.”

The metal missed his head by just a few inches.

Both Scheller and his girlfriend survived, but he did not escape without injuries.

“It hit me right in my left shoulder,” he said. “There’s a big bruise on my shoulder.”

He explained how they found the story of the other couple who experienced a similar situation.

“My girlfriend was looking into the likely probability of metal flying through your windshield,” Scheller said. “She didn’t find anything, but she did find one video.”

She found the video from KUTV’s previous story, where the same thing happened to another couple.

A similar piece of metal went through the windshield of a car Ethan White was driving.

“I just saw it hit the middle of the windshield and thought, ‘well, this is going to be crazy, or this is it,’” White said in September.

Now Scheller has a similar story to White.

Both pieces of metal are about the length of an arm and weigh 10 to 15 pounds.

The incident shocked Scheller and his girlfriend.

“If I drive at all, I get anxious, because I’m just scared of it,” Scheller said.

The couple looked up the serial number on the piece of metal and discovered it could belong to a trailer leaf spring.

They have hired a lawyer to see what they can do legally.
