Former Calcutta Medical College principal arrested for financial irregularities in doctor’s murder probe

Indian federal police have arrested Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, for alleged corruption. The arrest follows an investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a young woman doctor on the premises of the college.

Ghosh, who resigned from his post soon after the incident came to light, was taken into custody by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday on charges of financial irregularities. Along with Ghosh, two hospital supply suppliers and a close associate have also been arrested in connection with the case.

Reuters could not immediately obtain comment from Ghosh or her legal representative. The killing has sparked outrage and protests, particularly among doctors who have called for increased safety measures for women in the workplace and for justice for the victim. Despite tougher laws after the 2012 Delhi gang rape, activists say the incident highlights the persistent problem of sexual violence against women in India. A police volunteer, previously arrested and charged with the murder, remains in custody.
