X lets you edit DMs — here’s how to use the feature

X, the social network owned by Elon Musk, is finally rolling out one of the most sought-after features for direct messages: the ability to edit the message.

Over the weekend, X made the message editing feature available to iOS users. One of the company’s engineers posted about the rollout and said that the message editing feature will be coming to other platforms soon.

Here’s how you can use it:

  • Open any direct message chat from your iOS X app.
  • Long press on any message you’ve sent or tap the three-dot menu next to the message.
  • Select the “Edit Message” option to edit the sent message.

According to a support page, there is no time limit for editing posts. During our testing, we found that you can also edit old posts on the platform. However, you can only make five edits in total on a post. The social network also applies the same limit to editing posts.

Although X has stated that it keeps a log of edited messages for security reasons, it does not display the version history of edited messages at this time.

Users have been expecting to be able to edit their messages in messaging apps, as other chat apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Messenger have offered this feature for some time now. Apple also added the ability to edit messages sent via iMessage with iOS 16.
