Did you attend a religious school named in the report of the inquiry into alleged abuse? Have your say – The Irish Times

On Tuesday we learned that nearly 2,400 allegations of sexual abuse at 308 schools run by religious orders over a 30-year period have been revealed by a government-appointed inquiry.

The preliminary investigation report detailed a systemic culture of abuse at religious day and boarding schools across the country.

Some 2,395 allegations of abuse have been reported against 884 people. Of those accused of abuse, less than half are still alive, the report said.

The investigation also found that a high number of allegations were concentrated in special education schools, where 590 allegations were recorded in 17 establishments involving 190 alleged abusers.

Most reported incidents of abuse occurred between the early 1960s and early 1990s, with the highest number of reported incidents occurring between the early and mid-1970s.

Respondents reported being “sexually assaulted, stripped, raped and drugged in an atmosphere of terror and silence,” the report said. Survey participants said the abuses resulted in “feelings of shame, responsibility, isolation, helplessness and secrecy.”
