Alex Morgan announces retirement, reflects on legacy in women’s football

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A chair at a small table surrounded by rows of reporters. The seat was reserved for Alex Morgan, arguably the face of American women’s soccer, a player who helped advance the sport.

“The only way to succeed is to try and give it your all, and that’s all I’ve tried to do,” Morgan said.

On Friday, Morgan spoke publicly about his decision to leave the field.

“I’m just grateful to everyone who has played a role, big or small, in my career, and I’m so lucky to be able to finish that career here in this incredible city of San Diego,” she said.

From an Olympic gold medal to World Cup titles, Morgan leaves behind a lasting legacy.

“As female athletes, we all do so much more than just play our sport,” Morgan said.

Her legacy extends beyond sport. She also worked for greater equity in women’s football.

“I hope my legacy is that I have moved the game forward, that I have helped gain respect for the women’s game, that I have increased the value and investment in the women’s game,” she said.

Morgan said retiring at the end of the 2024 season was always the plan.

“Going into 2024, I wanted to finish this season by going to the playoffs and winning a championship. I have high hopes for my senior year,” Morgan said.

But plans changed with a mid-season retirement.

“A few weeks ago I found out I was pregnant. Although it was unexpected, I was very happy because it was what our family wanted – just a few months earlier than expected,” Morgan said.

She said she consulted with her doctor and husband to find out how long she could safely play. The answer: This Sunday would be her last game.

“I felt like it was the right time. I felt like the last few weeks I had lost a little bit of speed in my game. And I felt like for my body, my mind and my heart, it was the right decision at that time,” she said.

There comes a time when every professional athlete must step away from the game they have given their blood, sweat and tears to for years.

“It might only be a few minutes, or limited minutes, but I just want to enjoy every moment of the game on Sunday,” Morgan said.

As she prepares to hang up her boots, Morgan has helped pave a better path for young girls aspiring to become professional soccer players, just as she carved up defenders during her 13 1/2-year career.

“I think it’s right for this young girl to pursue anything you can imagine; to do what you think is impossible,” she said.
