Protect Yourself From Unlicensed Door-to-Door Sales With These FCAA Tips

Protect Yourself From Unlicensed Door-to-Door Sales With These FCAA Tips

The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) is urging Saskatchewan residents to exercise caution when interacting with door-to-door sellers and is working to ensure all direct sellers in the province comply with the The Direct Sellers Act and regulations.

The push for greater awareness of the issue of unlicensed businesses has intensified following the Tartans Paving and Hortons Paving and Masonry scandal, which saw the aforementioned businesses conducting unlicensed door-to-door sales in Moose Jaw and surrounding areas in August 2024.

As such, the FCAA reminds consumers that all door-to-door sellers, also known as direct sellers, in the province must be licensed and adhere to specific contractual requirements and cancellation rules.

To protect consumers, the FCAA has compiled a list of all licensed door-to-door salespeople operating in Saskatchewan, which can be viewed by visiting the FCAA website.

Consumer rights in home sales

If a salesperson comes to your door, here are some rights you should be aware of:

  • All contracts must be in writing unless the sale is for less than $100.
  • All direct sales contracts must include a statement regarding cancellation rights.
  • You have 10 days to cancel a contract without having to provide a reason.
  • If a contract is cancelled, the seller must refund all money received under the contract within 15 days of cancellation.

Tips for Consumers Considering Home Shopping

If you decide to purchase goods or services from a door-to-door salesperson, consider the following tips:

  • Ask to see a copy of their license and verify their registration on FCAA411.
  • Read the contract carefully, including the fine print.
  • Ask questions if you don’t understand something.
  • Don’t feel pressured to make an immediate purchase.
  • Keep deposits to a minimum: the higher the amount paid in advance, the greater the risk of loss.
  • Never give a blank check.
  • Check the seller’s rating and customer reviews in the Better Business Bureau directory at https://www.bbb.org/ or call 1-888-352-7601.
