Control of chemical contamination of agricultural raw materials must: FSSAI

Kolkata, Sep 7 (PTI) The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Saturday said controlling chemical contamination of agricultural raw materials is essential for advancing the food industry.

FSSAI Executive Director Inoshi Sharma said that enforcement of maximum residue limits (MRLs) in crops, fruits and spices is a big challenge.

Speaking at an event organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce, she stressed the need for regular audits and rejection of non-compliant products at the farm gates.

Sharma also stressed the importance of educating buyers about the adverse effects of excessive use of pesticides, which can lead to contamination of raw materials.

She announced her intention to form a committee comprising representatives from various ministries and departments to address the issue.

Further, Sharma stressed the need for accurate labelling and avoiding misleading claims by food business organisations (FBOs). She advocated for a culture of “self-compliance” among FBOs and suggested that they employ certified third parties to ensure compliance with standards.

Bharat Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Naresh Pachisia pointed out that detection of chemical residues used during agricultural production often leads to penalties for food processors and in many cases results in cancellation of export shipments of processed food products.

He called for increased awareness and vigilance regarding chemicals used in agro-horticulture and post-harvest processes.
