Rep. Vasquez Announces Bill to Improve Veterans Education and LCPS Head Start Grant

U.S. Congressman Gabe Vasquez visited New Mexico State University on Friday to discuss his new bill to help veterans access higher education, as well as a grant he secured for Las Cruces public schools.

Vasquez was at NMSU on Friday to unveil the Veteran Education Assistance Adjustment Act, a bill he recently introduced that would increase the stipends veterans use to purchase books and supplies while pursuing higher education.

“Our veterans have made sacrifices for our country and they deserve every opportunity to succeed in their education and career goals,” Vasquez said. “Sitting down with veterans today at NMSU was a great opportunity to hear firsthand about their needs and goals as they transition to civilian life. My Veterans Education Assistance Adjustment Act will make a significant difference in ensuring veterans have the tools they need to thrive in the classroom.”

During the meeting, Vasquez heard from veterans and NMSU leaders who talked about access to online classes and the “red tape veterans face when they return to school.”

“Many veterans often pay out of pocket for books and supplies, increasing their burden to achieve their educational goals,” said Hector Sanchez, NMSU director of military and veteran programs. “This bill better supports our student veterans as they face the ever-increasing costs of higher education.”

Meanwhile, Vasquez also met with Las Cruces Public Schools officials, including Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz, to announce a $4.5 million grant the congressman secured for Head Start projects.

“Investing in early childhood education is one of the best things we can do for the future of our children and our state. This $4.5 million Head Start grant will help ensure that Las Cruces students have access to the resources they need to get a strong start in life,” Vasquez said. “During my conversation with Superintendent Ruiz, we discussed the urgent need to expand early childhood services, especially in underserved areas. This grant is a critical step toward leveling the playing field and giving every child the chance to succeed, right from the start.”
