An investigation into the incident revealed that the body was that of 86-year-old Susan Lauber.

Authorities on Cape Cod have identified the person whose body was found in a burnt-out car in Sandwich on Monday.

The driver was Susan Lauber, 86 years old, a resident of Sandwich. Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois said in a statement.

An investigation revealed that Lauber drove her car into the Peter’s Pond area of Sandwich in the early morning hours on Monday. The prosecutor said she apparently drove her car off the paved road into a nearby wooded area.

“Due to the slope of the wooded area, the vehicle came to rest leaning on the passenger side,” the statement said. “A fire started and eventually engulfed the entire vehicle.”

Police found the car later that day, the prosecutor said in an earlier statement. Galibois assured the public that there was “no threat” to public safety.
