Birmingham student seriously injured in shooting outside Woodlawn High School basketball game

A teenager was seriously injured in a shooting outside Woodlawn High School Tuesday evening.

Shortly before 10 p.m., gunfire broke out after a basketball game at the school.

Sergeant LaQuitta Wade, a group of people got into a fight behind the school.

The victim and his friends got into their car and tried to drive away.

The suspect fired shots, hitting the teen in the passenger seat. The teen’s friends drove to the front of the school and reported that he had been shot.

Wade said the victim’s injuries are life-threatening.

He’s a student, but not at Woodlawn.

No one is in custody.

Birmingham City Schools spokesman Sherrel Wheeler Stewart said the shooting happened in the school parking lot and one person was taken to the hospital.
