Miami police release bodycam footage of Tyreek Hill’s detention

Tyreek Hill was pulled over by Miami-Dade police and cited for reckless driving ahead of the Miami Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hill wasn’t the only Dolphins player arrested — Calais Campbell stopped as he drove by to figure out what was going on and ended up being arrested — but there were big questions about why he ended up in handcuffs.

On Monday night, Miami-Dade police released footage of the incident, which shows an officer knocking on Hill’s window in a way that he didn’t like, leading Hill to ask them not to do it. After handing over his driver’s license and appearing to tell the officer to do what he needed to do in order to leave, Hill tried to roll up his window, which the first officer didn’t appreciate. This led to another officer (who threatened to break the car’s window) approaching as Hill was ordered to get out of his car, but that second officer proceeded to open Hill’s door and force him out.

Hill tried to call his officer, Drew Rosenhaus, as he was thrown to the ground and handcuffed. After officers picked him up and took him to the sidewalk, he was asked to sit down. He began to sit down slowly, citing recent knee surgery, but an officer forced him to sit down. Here’s another angle of Hill being pulled out of his car, handcuffed, and forced to sit down.

In the original clip, the officer speaks to Jonnu Smith, who receives conflicting information about whether he should get in his car and drive away, or stay and give his license to police. hereOfficers handcuffed Campbell for failing to leave the scene after he stopped to see why Hill was handcuffed.

“I disobeyed a direct order,” Campbell said after the team’s win Sunday, explaining why he was arrested. “He said I was too close to the scene and then I think he said something about me not moving my car in time, I don’t know… He told me I wasn’t arrested but he cited me for being arrested and released.”

In a pair of statementsMiami-Dade Police Commissioner Stephanie Daniels announced that an immediate review of the incident would take place and shortly after, one of the officers involved in the incident was “placed on administrative duties.”

The Dolphins released a statement on the “infuriating and heartbreaking” video, noting that they hope the incident can help spark lasting change.
