Las Vegas elementary school attacked multiple times by thieves, records show

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Thieves hit John S. Park Elementary hard on June 13.

A Clark County School District police officer was called there about a possible theft of copper wire. A CCSD police report shows that seven air conditioning units were stripped of all parts, with damage estimated at $75,000.

Then, on July 20, while contractors were taking measurements to repair the June damage, an employee was told that only seven units were damaged, but it turned out to be nine.

School officials at the time suspected that two more units had recently been damaged.

A police report shows the staff member was watching security cameras and saw intruders at the school early that morning. According to the report, she saw three people, one of whom was “walking across the building’s canopy.”

The report also said: “Items were thrown from the roof air conditioning units into the playground.” Three people were seen collecting the items and driving away in a shopping cart.

Just six days later, another CCSD police report indicates that a custodian heard a loud crash around 5:25 a.m. and saw a man and a woman near the parking lot and “saw some air conditioning parts on an overturned cart.”

He said while the woman was on the phone, she turned and looked at him and both people left.

On July 30, another overnight theft was reported at John S. Park Elementary, damaging three AC units. A police report shows that AC parts were found on the ground.

The next day, a CCSD police report shows that an office manager told police, “This was the sixth time someone had destroyed and stolen parts from his AC units.”

She also said, “The roof is easily accessible because the structure of the school is low to the ground.”

In the same report, an officer reported additional patrols from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m.

A school office manager estimated the damage at $120,000 and told police about similar crimes at some businesses.

Police reports also mention some people involved between the ages of 18 and 30.

School officials said in one report that it appears the suspects are stealing cooling cores from the AC units.

No suspects have been identified in any reports.
