The country’s airlines have just received their report cards. Who is the best and who is the worst?

Which airlines are doing well and not so well according to your travel companions? The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) “Air Traveler Consumer Report” for June 2024 is out and there are some positives overall.

However, according to one observer, there is one airline that should take a look in the mirror when it comes to sending passengers back.

When it comes to on-time arrivals, the top three are Hawaiian Airlines, which lands on time 83.6% of the time, Delta, with a punctuality rate of 78.6%, and Alaska, with a rate of 76.8%.

Frontier brings up the rear with an on-time arrival rate of 61.3%. I don’t know what’s going on at American, but the DFW-based carrier was number two in February, but fell to 7th in the latest report.

When it comes to cancellations, Southwest took the cake. It ranked first in terms of the lowest percentage of cancellations, with a rate of 0.3%. Frontier, again, trailed behind with a rate of 3.5%.

For those of you who have lost luggage on American, you are not alone. American’s mishandled baggage rate in June was 0.95%. On the other hand, travelers who have recently flown with Allegiant have something to brag about. Allegiant has the lowest number of lost baggage complaints at 0.17%.

If you don’t like hearing the phrase “Sorry, you can’t take that flight,” the DOT report suggests avoiding Frontier, Spirit, and American. While Allegiant and Delta scored an excellent zero denied boarding passengers, Frontier denied 3.43 passengers per seat for every 10,000 passengers boarded; American 0.7; and Spirit 0.62.

“It also seems remarkable that Delta has denied boarding to just one passenger in the first six months of the year, while American Airlines has denied boarding to 6,832,” wrote Gary Leff of ViewFromTheWing. “That’s more than all other U.S. airlines combined.”
