Trump announces new plan to end overtime taxes

Former President Donald Trump announced a new economic proposal that would ban overtime taxes on people who work more than 40 hours a week at a rally in Tucson, Arizona, on Thursday night.

“I’m also announcing that as part of our additional tax cuts, we will end all overtime taxes,” he said during his appearance in the key state. “That gives people more incentive to work.”

“People who work overtime are some of the hardest working citizens in our country, and for too long, no one in Washington has taken care of them,” Trump continued. “It’s time for working men and women to finally take a break, and we’re doing that because it’s the right thing. And I think it’s going to be great for the country.”

The latest proposal builds on his previous economic efforts to win over public opinion in his battle against Vice President Kamala Harris. He has not provided details on how he would garner congressional support for the legislation or how the plan would be implemented.

Before Thursday, the former president had supported eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security benefits, an effort that appeals both to restaurant workers in swing states like Nevada, a state with a large population of restaurant workers, and to seniors, who are much more likely to vote than younger voters.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Harris for copying parts of his economic plan, particularly the ban on tip taxes, which the vice president later adopted.

During Tuesday’s debate between the two candidates, Harris criticized Trump for his handling of the economy while in office. Trump said Harris and President Joe Biden’s leadership over the past three years has led to inflation and rising food prices, which have hurt families.

His support for not taxing overtime is likely an attempt to appeal to voters unhappy with the high cost of everyday goods and the decline in their wages since he left office.

“That’s why we’re going to say that if you work overtime, when you get over 40 hours a week — think about it — your overtime is going to be tax-free,” Trump said to applause from the audience. “OK, that’s good. You’re going to get it.”

The former president and Harris faced off on stage Tuesday night, and both candidates held their first public rallies after the debate. Harris appeared in Charlotte and Greensboro, North Carolina, on Thursday afternoon and evening.

The debate will likely be the only time they meet on stage after Trump said Thursday he would not participate in another clash.

“She was not at the Fox debate and has refused to appear on NBC and CBS,” he wrote on Truth Social. “KAMALA SHOULD FOCUS ON WHAT SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS. THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!”
