Indoor track? Two arrests in ‘Freddy Gums’ murder case as police investigate life insurance motive

Police have arrested two suspects over the apparent hit on ‘Noem My Skollie’ actor David Manuel, involving family members.

In a dramatic twist in the investigation into David Manuel’s murder, it has emerged that the award-winning actor may have been murdered for insurance money.

Manuel, who played 20s gang leader ‘Freddy Gums’ in the 2016 blockbuster Call My Skollieand a friend was shot dead in Cape Town’s gang-ridden township of Gugulethu last month.

The 46-year-old actor and Alfonso Fisher were found with multiple gunshot wounds when police arrived on the scene after the fatal shooting on October 8.

Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the arrest of a man and a woman aged 30 and 40 on Tuesday followed an intensive investigation.

“The research has shown this life insurance policies were taken out by family members which was identified as a possible motive,” Twigg revealed.

He said the two suspects, who were taken into custody on Tuesday, will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, November 14, charged with murder and fraud.

Twigg said the possibility of more arrests has not been ruled out.

From skollie to star…

Manuel played the role of “Freddy Gums,” a 1928s gang leader in the 2016 film Call My Skollie.

During the filming of the gripping movie based on the life of screenwriter John W. Fredericks, Manuel was on parole after serving nine years behind bars.

The Gugulethu actor also co-starred danZ! (2017) and Number 37 (2018).

Manuel won Best Supporting Actor for his powerful performance as the tough-as-nails Freddy Gums Call My Skollie won the award for best film The African Film Festival (TAFF) in July 2017.
