As Dover gathers to honor veterinarians, an elderly woman is killed in a pedestrian accident

An elderly person Dover Police say a woman was killed in a pedestrian accident on Monday.

As city leaders and residents gathered in Hurd Park for a Veterans Day At the ceremony around 6 p.m., police and firefighters were called to Prospect Street, near the Garden Savings Federal Credit Union, for a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.

Emergency responders found the victim, a 74-year-old female Dover resident, who was transported to St. Clare’s Hospital in Dover and pronounced dead, Police Chief Jonathan Delaney said.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of her next of kin.

The incident remains under investigation, the chief said, but preliminary reports indicate the victim was crossing the street in the middle of the street, outside a crosswalk, when she was struck. It was dark at the time, Delaney said.

Investigators determined two vehicles were involved, the chief said. The first hit the woman and was then hit by another vehicle. Both drivers remained at the scene and were interviewed by detectives.

Delaney could not immediately identify the make and model of the vehicles involved.

The Morris County Sheriff’s Department CSI and Accident teams were called in to participate in the investigation.
