Jacksonville Jaguars set to face Cleveland Browns

The Jacksonville Jaguars used last week to recover and adjust from their Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins. A winnable game they had within their grasp slipped away in a disappointing loss.

The biggest adjustments come between Week 1 and Week 2. The Cleveland Browns are a struggling team with Deshaun Watson at quarterback and are without a star target in tight end David Njoku. This game is very winnable for the Jaguars, although it could come down to a single point.

Head coach Doug Pederson told reporters Friday that the team responded well to the loss and the adjustments it had to make due to the injury to cornerback Tyson Campbell and a handful of additions.

“I feel good. They feel good. Obviously the priority for me is getting them back in shape physically because of the heat and everything this week, and making sure their bodies are fresh for Sunday,” Pederson said. “I think mentally, the guys have moved on. They’re obviously focused on this week and trying to bounce back.”

As for what this team will look like in terms of the finished product? That won’t be final yet.

“I think what you see also is injuries, things change and teams are not, in September, where they want to be in December and January,” he said. “So everybody’s working on those things and we’re working on them too. We’re just trying to get better every week.”

The Jaguars will obviously have to deal with Watson. Despite his struggles and poor play, Watson remains a threat at all times. His mobility allows him to make plays whether on the ground or in the air. Pederson and the Jaguars are prepared to do so, however.

“You study him from a defensive standpoint, you study him, how he likes to scramble and where he likes to scramble,” Pederson said. “Which side does he like to go to — the throw side, the back door side, the middle. That’s when you put your rush plan together, I think, you figure it all out. When you get a chance to tackle him, you’ve got to tackle him and get him on the ground because he can be elusive and get out of the pocket. If you rush too high, they’re going to scramble and get away. So it’s just a matter of staying disciplined and trusting the rush plan of the week.”
