Kamala Harris’ latest campaign look is one of her most significant yet

Vice President Kamala Harris’s successful campaign continues. Last night, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee appeared at the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Foundation’s Phoenix 2024 Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to American society. There, Harris and President Joe Biden both addressed the crowd, emphasizing their ongoing relationship with the CBC. “The Congressional Black Caucus has been the conscience of Congress and our nation, and as a proud former member of the CBC, I know firsthand that America is counting on the leaders in this room not only for conscience, but for vision,” Harris said. “Now the baton is in our hands. I truly believe that America is ready to turn the page on the politics of division and hate, and to do that, our nation is counting on the leaders in this room.”

For her mainstage speech, Harris wore a modern creation that proved to be one of her most intentional campaign looks yet: a custom black sequined gown by LaQuan Smith, an up-and-coming African-American designer. (See his spring 2025 collection during New York Fashion Week here .) The choice was apt, given that the evening was all about shining a spotlight on Black excellence in all its forms, and the shimmering silhouette felt both formal and celebratory. This isn’t the first time Harris has worn Smith’s dazzling work, either: Last year, she wore her gold sequined button-down top while attending Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour in Maryland.
