Jane’s Addiction Issues Update After Frontman Perry Farrell Punches Guitarist Dave Navarro On Stage

Following an onstage altercation in which Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell punched guitarist Dave Navarro, the rock band is speaking out and taking stock.

“We would like to sincerely apologize to our fans for the events that occurred last night,” the band wrote in a statement shared on their Instagram Story. “As a result, we will be canceling tomorrow night’s show in Bridgeport.”

Assuring fans that refunds would be offered at the time of purchase, the rock band provided no further details on the puzzling incident.

A viral video shared on social media shows an agitated Farrell violently bumping into Navarro while he performed their song, “Ocean Size,” at Boston’s Lender Pavilion on Friday night. An angry Farrell yells at his bandmate while Navarro tries to keep his frontman at bay, creating a barrier between them with his arm.

Before crew members could separate the musicians, Farrell threw a punch at Navarro. He was subdued, but Farrell resisted before being taken off stage.

The room went dark and the show ended abruptly.

The morning after the fight, Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau, gave her take on what she thought happened.

“There was clearly a lot of tension and animosity between the members…the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit. Perry stood up in front of Dave and punched him in the body,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Perry’s frustration grew as night after night he felt like the volume on stage was extremely loud and his voice was drowned out by the band. Perry suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the front row audience started complaining to Perry, insulting him that the band was playing too loud and they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost his mind.”

Etty Lau, also a musician and actress, claims the band started “Ocean Size” before Farrell was ready and that her husband “couldn’t hear over the boom and the vibration of the instruments and by the end of the song he wasn’t singing, he was just screaming…to be heard.”

She wrote that bassist Eric Avery “won the fight.”

“While Dave held Perry at a distance to defuse the situation, Dan rushed in to defuse the situation by holding Perry back. Dave stepped back to remove his guitar. Eric approached Perry, in the dark, behind Dan, put him in a headlock and punched him three times in the stomach. Kevin, a long-haired crew member, pulled Eric away. Eric then casually walked to the front of the stage to apologize to the audience for the premature end of the show.”

Lau said Dave “looked handsome and cool in the middle of a fight,” while her husband “was a mad beast for the next half hour.”

“He didn’t calm down in the end, but he broke down and cried. Eric either didn’t understand what (de-escalation) meant or he took advantage of the situation and threw a few low blows at Perry. Well, that’s… my first-person account of what happened. Watch the video for yourself,” she concluded.
