Amazon has several car phone mounts, some of which are the best phone mounts in 2024. By looking through all the options and comparing specs and multiple uses, as well as talking to other people who rely heavily on their phone mounts, I settled on the phone mount I liked best and tested it in all capacities. I wanted a mount that gave me the ability to stick it to the windshield or dashboard, remove it from the base, and rotate it easily.

The iOttie Easy One Touch 6 is an ultra-popular and affordable choice. While there are several options to choose from, such as multiple generations and models, I decided to go with the latest generation designed for the dashboard and windshield. On Amazon, its list price is $26.95. However, I was able to purchase it as part of a limited time offer for $20.95 plus tax. I was unable to find the latest generation at local stores like Best Buy or Target.

First Impressions: Unboxing the iOttie Phone Holder

The first thing I noticed when I unboxed the iOttie Dashboard and Windshield Phone Mount was how simple its design is and how well it’s made. It comes in three pieces: the phone mount, the suction cup with the extendable arm, and the dashboard mount for the suction cup. It also comes with easy-to-read instructions, but the design of the mount is pretty simple.

For the phone holder, the arms are 3.75 inches wide, which will hold a phone that’s slightly smaller than that width. Arm holders need a bit of room to keep your phone secure. For comparison, the new iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are 2.8 inches wide and 3.0 inches wide, which gives the arms plenty of room to adjust. However, you’ll also need to consider how bulky your phone case will be.

Assembling the phone holder on the windshield and dashboard

To assemble the phone mount to the mount ball joint, I loosened the mount knob, but did not remove it. I had to push the ball joint into the mount and tighten the mount knob to hold the phone mount.

To attach the whole gadget to the windshield, I opened the locking lever where the suction cup was, attached the suction cup to the window where I wanted it, and closed the locking lever. From there, I loosened the pivot knob to adjust the telescopic arm, and tightened it when it was where I wanted the phone holder.

For the dashboard, there was just one extra step. Since the suction cup can’t attach to the dashboard material, I placed the dashboard mount on the dashboard where I wanted the phone holder to be permanently attached. There was already adhesive on the mount – all I had to do was peel off the paper. Then the gadget attached to the dashboard mount the same way it easily attached to the window. Of course, I had to loosen the mount’s knob and rotate the phone holder to get it facing the right direction.

iOttie Phone Holder Review

The iOttie phone holder was simple to use. When the phone was placed in the holder, the back of the phone pressed a giant button that activated the side locking arms, which snapped shut on either side of the phone. To remove the phone, I used my thumb and index finger to push into the release bars, and from there I was able to grab my phone.

I did some testing for this phone mount. While the mount was suctioned to the windshield, I placed the phone in the mount and it held pretty securely. Once the mount was in its permanent spot on the dashboard, I put the phone back in the mount. The suction cup on the dashboard mount held strong. Then I took it for a ride on a windy road and a gravel driveway, and while the mount bounced a bit due to the rocky terrain, the phone and mount didn’t budge.

Notable features that come with this phone holder

The iOttie phone holders feature a telescopic arm that extends up to 6.75 inches and a 250-degree swivel to give you a wide range of viewing options for your phone. It also comes with a built-in cord organizer that can swivel so you can easily access your phone’s cord. Finally, if you have a larger phone, the phone holder has adjustable bottom feet, so your phone doesn’t sit too high on the gadget. It’s best to have a balance of weight so your phone can stay securely in place.

Tips for using the iOttie phone holder

While the phone mount is user-friendly, there are a few tips to ensure you get the most out of using the product. If you have a leather dashboard, the company says the dashboard pad is not designed to stick to leather or curves. It is recommended that you place it on your windshield instead. Additionally, if heat causes your phone mount to fall off and get dirty, you can easily restore the suction cup’s grip. Simply clean it with warm water and let it air dry.

How does it compare to previous generation iOttie phone mounts?

The previous generations all work the same way, though I noticed a difference between the latest generation I tested for this article and the 2nd generation installed in a friend’s vehicle. With the new phone mount, removing the telescoping arm requires a real tug on it. It has ridges to help it stay in place. However, the 2nd generation has a knob that loosens around the arm to extend it. To be honest, I preferred the style of the 2nd generation because it didn’t feel like I had to rip the phone mount off the dashboard.

Different iOttie Phone Holder Options

If you check out the iOttie phone mount product page, you’ll notice that under the model name, there are three other iOttie options other than the dashboard and windshield version. Each version still comes with the phone mount. However, the piece after the button on the mount is different for each one. The vent option comes with a pin-type piece that fits between the plastic pieces of your vent. Just be aware that your phone can overheat during the winter if hot air is blowing on it. It’s suggested to close the vent if your vehicle allows it. Otherwise, you may want to invest in another option.

There’s also the CD slot option, which allows the insert to extend once inside the slot to hold the phone holder in place. If you’re still using your CD player or the slot isn’t in the most convenient location, this may not work for you. The other option is the vehicle display, which connects to the back of the vehicle’s display – you just need to make sure there’s enough room for the release bars. According to the company, this phone holder is recommended for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y because there’s room behind the screens that come with the vehicle.

The air vent and CD player mounts cost the same as the dashboard and windshield options. The vehicle display has a list price of $30, but the sale price remains $20.95. Of all the mounting options, the dashboard and windshield phone mount is probably the most practical and popular.

Overall thoughts on the iOttie phone holder

I’ll be honest, the iOttie is one of the best car phone mounts I’ve personally tested. When it’s on the dashboard, it feels sturdy and can handle the pulling force when I use the telescopic feature. On the windshield, I have no qualms about the suction function failing and the device ending up on the floor. However, if this happens due to heat, it’s easy to wash and reattach to the windshield for continued use. One way to combat the heat, however, might be to properly use a car sun visor.

The design is simple enough to be easy to use while still offering useful features for all sorts of uses. For example, as a content creator who enjoys taking driving footage, with the use of the iPhone’s camera app’s action mode, I can simply rotate my phone sideways, maneuver it a little higher, and hit record. In conclusion, while there are several great car phone mounts available, the iOttie Easy One Touch 6 is the one I, and many other users, have come to prefer.
