Lake Shore school officials investigating skirmish between parents and coaches at football game – Macomb Daily

Lake Shore Public Schools officials said an investigation is underway after a parent allegedly attacked a Varsity High School football coach in an incident that was caught on video.

The attack occurred during Friday night’s game against Warren Woods Tower High School on Bunert Road near 12 Mile in Warren.

In a letter to parents, Lake Shore High School Principal Janelle Bross confirmed the assault. She said the parent had been on the field during the game.

“While on the sidelines, the parent was involved in a physical altercation with one of our coaches,” Bross said in the letter.

The video, posted by an anonymous participant on the St. Clair Shores “What’s Going On” Facebook page, shows a man from the visitors’ stands entering the football field.

The man approaches an unidentified Shorians coach and appears to throw a roundhouse punch that hits the coach in the head. As the coach falls to the ground, a skirmish breaks out as other players and coaches join in the fight to try to subdue the parent.

Bross said the coach “has been released” by the coaching staff. Neither he nor the parent will be allowed on the property for any future events at the high school on 13 Mile Road near Jefferson Avenue or any other activities on Lake Shore, she added.

“We are extremely disappointed by the actions of these two men – this behavior falls far short of the expectations we have for all members of our school community,” Bross said in the letter.

The reason for the coach’s dismissal was unclear as the video appears to show he was the victim of the attack.

Tasha Antoon, the district’s communications director, referred a reporter’s request to Bross, who did not respond to requests for additional comment.

Lake Shore Superintendent Joe DiPonio said in an email that he is aware of the incident. He added that school officials will be able to address the issue Monday after they have a chance to sit down with those who were present and witnessed the incident.

It is unclear whether Warren police were present at the game and whether they took any action. A representative for the police department did not immediately respond to a request for information.

Warren Woods Tower won the football game, 28-12, according to the Macomb Daily’s high school sports coverage.
