In the BOH In the What I Love series, we ask designers to create a mood board of what inspires them right now.

Linda Hayslett sprinkles a little Hollywood star dust into all of her spaces. With a background as a celebrity stylist, the Los Angeles-based designer knows there’s nothing like gold to add a touch of glamour to even the toughest materials. And to support those glittering elements, she employs a “full arsenal of skills” that deftly balances beauty and substance. “Offering services that integrate design and construction at every stage of a project, from concept to completion, is the best way to give clients the living experience they’re looking for,” she says of her design and build studio, LH.Designs.

Hayslett’s artful combination of luxury and pragmatism is perfectly captured in her mood board. Depicting a real-life renovation in progress, it pairs a range of dark-hued tiles with polished brass fixtures and gold-flecked wallpaper. “It’s sophisticated beauty with a twist,” says the designer. “Four key colours – black, navy, plum and gold – run throughout the house, relating to each other from room to room. The gold tones of the light fixtures and fabrics contrast with the deeper hues, creating a flow that keeps your eye moving.”

Here, the designer discusses her distinctive selection of pretty bird prints, blue terrazzo and evocative pottery, as well as the contemporary walnut table on which she arranged her picks.

1. BLACK INTERIOR DESIGNERS INC. FAN SET BY BENJAMIN MOORE
“I chose this color chart first because the last thing we’ll be choosing on this project is paint. I never choose paint until all the major pieces are in place and we’re about to finish drywalling. Lighting and space change once pieces are installed in a room. The color of your wallpaper, tile, and cabinets all play a role in how light reflects off the paint, and this color chart gives us plenty of options to choose from once we get to that stage.”

2. PARALLEL ROBE HOOK BY KOHLER
“This vibrant and modern single coat rack in brushed brass will be used in any bathroom. The finish perfectly matches the warm gold tones we are adding throughout the house. I have used this hook in other projects and love the look and shape – it has a notch that helps hold towels in place.”

3. CHINOISERIE SPRING WALLPAPER IN PINK BY SHE SHE
“As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the perfect wallpaper for the master bedroom. I chose it to bring out the plum in the master bathroom tiles. It’s a pretty wallpaper that isn’t too delicate but will help bring a sense of calm to the space.”

4. CONISTON OCHER VELVET FABRIC BY GP & J BAKER
“For the living room, I wanted a fun sofa color, so we went with this delicious velvet fabric. It will pair perfectly with the wallpaper behind it, making it a statement piece in the room.”

5. RALPH LAUREN AMALFI NAVY MATCHING PAINT BY MYPERFECTCOLOR
“We wanted a navy blue for the kitchen cabinets, not too blue, not too dark. This color embodies the style we are going for.”

6. CROFT HOUSE POTTERY
“I love the texture of this handmade vase and how, even broken, it can still be an interesting object. We want perfection, but it’s often the imperfect objects and the stories behind them that make a home.”

7. BLACK PEARL SHADOW LEAVES WALLPAPER BY COMMERCIAL WALL DECOR
“My client has a small bathroom in her basement. We wanted to make it special, so we opted for this pearlescent black wallpaper from MDC to give it a touch of luxury, but also to keep it consistent with the rest of the house.”

8. YNEZ DINING TABLE BY CROFT HOUSE
“The walnut in this table is the perfect base material for the other pieces we are incorporating into the renovation. We will be adding walnut furniture throughout to accentuate the warm and relaxed yet luxurious feel. Croft House always has beautiful contemporary pieces with character, and this new table is no exception.”

9. SELECT EMTEK’S L-SQUARE FACETED LEVER
“With its satin brass finish, this faceted handle is perfect for accenting the brass and gold tones we use throughout the house. I love that we can choose the backplate and finish. We will be using these for all interior doors.”

10. KABUTO AMAZONITE WALL COVERING BY WOLF-GORDON
“When looking at the samples, this wallpaper stood out with its glitter and gold shimmer. It’s pretty on its own and will make the whole living room sparkle.”

11. ETHERIUM TILE BY E-STONE LA VENEZIANA IN NERO DUCALE BY TREND
“Terrazzo is everywhere, but when I saw this tile for the guest bathroom floor, it was different. I hadn’t seen a lot of terrazzo with pops of blue. Since we have navy throughout the project, it was the perfect choice to help tie that thread together.”

12. CLOÉ CERAMIC TILES IN BLUE BY BEDROSIANS
“I wanted to keep the moody feel of the master bathroom, but change the color of the guest bathroom, so for the guest bathroom, I opted for this dark navy subway tile, which will provide the perfect contrast to the gold plumbing fixtures we chose for this space.”

13. NANO CORTEN COPPER TILE BY ARTISTIC TILE
“For the master bathroom floor, I opted for this rust-colored tile. The imperfect metal complements the plum subway tile in the shower, so it was a natural choice to give this space a luxurious feel.”

14. RIVER ROCKETS
“I love having a plant or flower, whether dried or fresh. These river reeds bring nature into a space, giving it a calming feel.”

15. MOA FABRIC IN TAMARIN BY S. HARRIS AT FABRICUT
“I love this woven linen fabric because I designed it with the Black Artists + Designers Guild and used it to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Croft House’s Sierra chair. When my client saw the chair upholstered in this fabric, she wanted it for her home.”

16. CLOÉ CERAMIC TILES IN GREEN BY BEDROSIANS
“This is the second subway tile I’ve chosen for my client’s guest bathroom. The green adds a more interesting look to the shower since we’re only using it as a decorative accent on the walls. It will complement the navy tile and make guests feel like they’re staying in a boutique hotel rather than a friend’s house.”

17. VILLAGE GLOSSY TILE IN AUBERGINE BY TOTAL HOME DISTRIBUTORS
“This plum tile was sourced from a local tile shop in Los Angeles and has a beautiful handmade look. My client plans to soak in her large Kohler tub, and to make it a centerpiece of the master bath, I chose this dark eggplant tile as the backdrop.”
