Birmingham leaders work with food truck owners to meet city requirements

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The City of Birmingham hosted a food truck rally to help food truck owners get everything they need to operate legally and safely within city limits. They were able to learn about licenses issued by the city as well as inspections conducted by the health and fire departments.

It was like a one-stop shop for food truck owners or those looking to start one. It was an opportunity to hear directly from the city and find out what their requirements are and what it takes to successfully run a business in Birmingham.

City leaders say it’s all part of Mayor Randall Woodfin’s plan to continue putting citizens first by helping business owners. On Monday, they had the opportunity to learn more about obtaining business licenses and permits. They also met with the health department to learn about their requirements.

The timing of the meeting was perfect, as the city is preparing to welcome thousands of people next month for the Magic City Classic, and by October 1, every food truck or tent operating in the city will have to be inspected by the fire department. This year, they’re doing it for free, but next year, there will be a fee.

“A lot of young entrepreneurs or those who have been in business for a while can learn some of the proper methods to get our own food trucks and certifications,” says Gerald Ware. “This gives an opportunity for some Birmingham residents and vendors to start their businesses and food trucks and create generational wealth.”

Fire inspections are conducted at Fire Station #6, located at 317 N. 15th Street.

Inspection hours at the station are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Operators should call the Birmingham Fire Prevention Bureau at 205-250-7540 to schedule an appointment.

The city announced that starting January 2, 2025, all food trucks operating in Birmingham will first need to pass a fire inspection before they can apply for a Birmingham business license, mobile vending license or health department permit. These requirements are in place as additional safety precautions.
