Charging cell phone catches fire, sets bed on fire in Topsfield

One resident suffered a minor burn.

A charging cell phone exploded and set a bed ablaze in a Topsfield home Saturday, authorities said.

Residents were asked to evacuate the home and Topsfield Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to the scene, according to a statement from the fire department.

Firefighters removed burning bedding from the home and ventilated the residence, the department said.

One of the residents suffered a minor burn, authorities said, and within 45 minutes all staff were evacuated from the scene.

Property damage is estimated at $5,000, according to the statement.

The Topsfield Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office continue to investigate the fire.
