McNeese’s receivers room improves after Stephen F. Austin win

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – The McNeese Cowboys earned their second win of the season last weekend against Stephen F. Austin, and saw a marked increase in their passing attack as several receivers stepped up on the night.

One of those receivers who has become a reliable ally for quarterback Clifton McDowell is Jer’Michael Carter, who had five receptions for 60-plus yards in the win.

“Jer’Michael has been a real war father since the summer, he’s going to be a big player here,” head coach Gary Goff said. “It was great to see him step up his game Saturday night and he became Mr. Dependable with Cliff looking for him.”

“The chemistry has built, we throw after practice, we throw about five to 10 minutes after practice and it makes our chemistry a lot better every week,” Carter said.

Another bright spot in the room that Goff was keen to highlight this week was the production of Jessie Campbell, who put on what he called a breakout day for Junior.

“I thought Jesse Campbell had a good game too, it was good to see him get in the end zone,” Goff said. “It was good to see him get out there and make some tough catches, we need a little more production from those receivers and we did that Saturday night and it’s got to continue to increase.”

One of the other stories in the receivers room has been the health of receiver Curtis Deville, who injured his shoulder a few weeks ago against Texas A&M.

This week was another solid week of progression for Deville as he was back in protection for the first practice on Tuesday, and coach Goff made it clear that it’s possible he could play a limited role next weekend as he’ll be a game-time decision on Saturday.
