Teen charged with murder after teen killed, another injured, South Carolina police say

Weeks after a teenager was killed and another injured in a shooting in South Carolina, a 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to the murder, Dalzell resident Jonathan Brown was also charged with five counts of attempted murder as well as a single count of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, trafficking fentanyl, possession of a stolen pistol, possession of a pistol by a person under 18 and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Wednesday.

The charges stem from a Sept. 3 shooting that left 16-year-old Jayvion Jones of Hampton, Georgia, dead, the statement said.

Jones was one of six juveniles in the car targeted in the shooting in the Dalzell area, the sheriff’s office said.

Another 16-year-old boy was also injured in the shooting, the statement said. No further information on the surviving victim’s condition was available, but after the shooting, the sheriff’s office said the boy was expected to make a full recovery.

No other injuries were reported.

No information on the motive for the shooting was available.

Around 8:30 p.m., Jones’ body was discovered inside a vehicle at Black River Road and Edens Road, Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker previously said.

After identifying Brown as a suspect in the shooting, officers searched his home and discovered fentanyl and a stolen gun, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. On Sept. 11, Brown was arrested on charges of trafficking fentanyl and possession of a stolen gun and taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said.

As the investigation continued, deputies said they linked Brown to the shooting and additional warrants were served on him, including one for murder.

Brown remains in the county jail and is being held pending a bail hearing before a circuit judge, the statement said.

Despite Brown’s arrest, the sheriff’s office said it is continuing to investigate the death.
