CBI probes Sandip Ghosh, Abhijit Mondal’s involvement in RG Kar case

The Central Bureau of Investigation told a Kolkata court on Tuesday that it has not yet found evidence to prove the direct involvement of former RG Kar hospital director Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mondal. Both were arrested by the CBI last week in connection with the rape and murder of the junior Kolkata doctor on August 9. The victim’s body was found in the seminar room of the government hospital.

The court also extended the police custody of Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal in the doctor’s rape and murder case by three days. The CBI counsel had sought an extension in their custody as they were not cooperating with the CBI officers, news agency PTI reported.

The central agency informed the court that its investigators were yet to get any evidence of gang rape in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case. The CBI counsel also said the investigation has so far revealed that Ghosh and Mondal had spoken to each other several times on the day the doctor’s body was found.

The call details of the two arrested men showed that they had also made several calls to certain numbers on that day, which the CBI officials need to be informed about. Accordingly, the court extended their judicial remand for three more days, till September 20.

The CBI arrested Ghosh and Mondal in connection with the RG Kar rape and murder case on September 15. Besides them, three other accomplices of Ghosh were also arrested by the central investigation agency.

Ghosh, however, was already in CBI custody as he was arrested earlier on September 2 for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the government-run RG Kar Hospital.

Earlier in the day, Mondal was suspended as per the West Bengal government service rules, days after he was arrested by the CBI. Ghosh and Mondal were also questioned together on Monday by the CBI sleuths. They sat face to face and were asked to narrate what happened on August 9.

A civic volunteer of Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the rape and murder case which is being investigated by the CBI on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
