QB Trevor Lawrence explains teammates’ positive reaction to his sense of urgency

JACKSONVILLE – What matters is what comes next.

Trevor Lawrence spoke to the media on Thursday, with an eye on the immediate future – and a prime-time game on Monday.

He also has an eye on the locker room and says he likes what he sees.

“Our team responded very well,” Lawrence said. “We’re together.”

Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars’ four-year starting quarterback, spoke Thursday about Monday’s game against one of the AFC’s best teams, the four-time defending AFC East champion Buffalo Bills. He also discussed his postgame reaction to what was at times a sloppy offensive performance in the Week 2 loss to the Cleveland Browns at EverBank Stadium on Sunday.

Lawrence said immediately after the loss of the Jaguars’ offense, “We suck right now,” and said Thursday that the Jaguars remain focused and united despite losing two in two games to start the season.

“We’ve had some really good conversations,” Lawrence said. “We’re tight-knit. That’s the biggest thing we can’t lose and we haven’t lost that at all. We have a very tight-knit team and that’s important. We have a mature team that’s going to respond. Anybody that says something and speaks up, the guys are going to respect that.

“We have a very tight locker room, so it’s not a surprise. We know what we have to do this week. We have the right mindset.”

Receiver Christian Kirk said the response to Lawrence has been positive, adding, “you want to see that emotion because it means he cares.”

“He wants us to be great and I think we all do,” Kirk said. “If you’re not frustrated at this point, then you don’t care enough. The guys we have in this locker room, the frustration comes from a good place because we know how good a team we can be.

“When it comes from 16 (Lawrence), I think guys rally around that.”

Lawrence, in two games this season, has thrown for 382 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, saying Thursday: “There are things in my game that I’m doing well right now and I wanted to do well this season, and there are other parts that I still need to work on.”
