Kamala Harris says anyone who breaks into her home ‘gets shot’

Vice President Kamala Harris defended her gun ownership and said she would use a firearm to protect her home during a conversation with Oprah Winfrey Thursday night.

Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, appeared at a Unite for America event in Michigan, where she spoke with Winfrey about a range of policy issues, including immigration, access to reproductive health care and her support for gun control reform. In a candid moment, Winfrey asked Harris about her comments during last week’s debate against Donald Trump when she confirmed she owned a gun.

“I’m a gun owner, and so is Tim Walz,” Harris said.

“I didn’t know that,” Winfrey replied.

“If someone breaks into my house, they’re going to get shot,” Harris added. “I probably shouldn’t have said that. But my team will deal with that later.”

Her remarks came after a segment focusing on families affected by gun violence and school shootings. The vice president said she can be both a gun owner who supports the Second Amendment and a politician who calls for gun law reform.

“I think for too long, on the issue of gun violence, some people have made a completely false choice, suggesting that you either support the Second Amendment or you support taking away everyone’s guns,” Harris said. “I support the Second Amendment, and I support assault weapons bans, universal background checks, red flag laws. And those are just common sense measures.”

Harris’ campaign did not immediately respond to questions about the vice president’s comments or how long she has owned guns. Reuters noted that she said she was a skilled shooter in a 2015 interview with Politico. She added at the time that she had fired a gun “on multiple occasions.”

She also told reporters in 2019 that she owned a gun.

“I own a gun for the same reason a lot of people do: for my personal safety,” she said at the time. “I made a career as a prosecutor.”
